LAS CRUCES -- A pecan orchard workshop geared to small orchard managers and home owners with a few trees will be held July 15 at New Mexico State University's Fabian Garcia Research Center in Las Cruces.
Esteban Herrera, horticulturist with NMSU's Cooperative Extension Service, will give a brief introduction about pecan physiology then field questions about pecans from workshop participants. Herrera calls the workshop "Everything You Wanted to Know About Pecans But Were Afraid to Ask."
Large orchard managers attend other conferences hosted by Extension during the year, but Herrera saw a need to reach the smaller operators as well as home owners.
"I've received a lot of phone calls recently about pecan basics from home owners and orchard managers with less than 10 acres of trees," he said.
The workshop will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. at the research center on University Avenue just west of Main Street in Las Cruces. If time permits, Herrera also will give participants a tour of the university's pecan orchard.
Registration fee is $5 before July 7, or $7 the day of the workshop and will cover refreshments. To register, send a check to
