ROSWELL -- Bill Thompson, Chaves County program director for New Mexico State University's Cooperative Extension Service, will retire July 31 after 30 years of service.
Thompson began his Extension career in 1967 as an agent in Eddy County. In 1976, he moved to Chaves County where he became program director in 1983. Throughout his career, he worked with 4-H members, farmers, ranchers and dairy producers.
"I've really enjoyed working with the 4-H groups and the agricultural producers," Thompson said. "It's been good to see Chaves County grow economically through the dairy industry and specialty crops such as chile."
Thompson has conducted outstanding agricultural programs during his career, said Billy Dictson, interim associate dean and director of Extension. "He is widely recognized as an equine expert and is asked to judge horse shows across the country."
Thompson has been instrumental in promoting Extension in Chaves County and the Pecos Valley, Dictson said. "He will be missed by the Extension Service."
Thompson will remain in contact with farmers and ranchers in Chaves County after his retirement because he plans to become an agricultural real estate agent. He also plans to continue his long association with the Eastern New Mexico State Fair as a horse judge.
"I also want to work with my horses and spend some time with my grandkids," he said.
The Chaves County Extension office will host a farewell party for Thompson on July 31 from 7:30 to 11 a.m. The public is invited.
