LAS CRUCES -- Habitat for elk and livestock will be the focus of a conference in Socorro on Friday, Dec. 5, on the campus of New Mexico Tech University at the Macy Conference Center.

The annual meeting of the New Mexico Section of the Society for Range Management also will be sponsored by New Mexico State University, the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish and the New Mexico Chapter of The Wildlife Society.

The meeting will open with remarks by Jerry Schickedanz, interim dean of NMSU's College of Agriculture and Home Economics. It will continue with discussions of habitat and nutrient requirements for elk and livestock, elk census techniques and disease interaction between animals.

After lunch, the focus will be on habitat manipulations for elk and livestock herds, and how to integrate elk into ranching operations. Phil Zwank, former head of New Mexico's Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, now head of Texas Tech University's range and wildlife department, will speak on current attitudes and values of elk and livestock.

The registration fee, which includes a buffet lunch, is $25 before Nov. 21 and $35 thereafter. For more information, contact Debbie Romig at (505) 646-3435.
