LAS CRUCES -- Bruce Hinrichs was named eastern district department head with New Mexico State University's Cooperative Extension Service on Dec. 4. Hinrichs has been acting department head since July 2.

As department head, Hinrichs will administer Extension offices in 11 eastern New Mexico counties, Chaves, Colfax, Curry, DeBaca, Eddy, Guadalupe, Harding, Lea, Quay, Roosevelt and Union. He will oversee Extension programming, budgeting and personnel in the district.

"Bruce is very well known throughout New Mexico," said Billy Dictson, interim associate Extension director and associate dean of NMSU's College of Agriculture and Home Economics. "I think he will be a very valuable addition to the administrative team of NMSU's Cooperative Extension Service."

Hinrichs began his Extension career as a 4-H agent in Curry County in 1986. He became agricultural agent and county program director in 1988. He received the National Association of County Agricultural Agents' achievement award in 1993. He is currently serving as 4-H and youth committee chair for the NACAA. In addition, he is on the national 4-H Congress event design team.

"Bruce was one of our very outstanding agricultural agents for a number of years in Curry County," Dictson said.

Hinrichs has both a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in animal science from NMSU.
